The Four Elements in Art and What They Express https://www.healing-power-of-art.org/the-four-elements-in-art-and-what-they-express/ https://www.healing-power-of-art.org/the-four-elements-in-art-and-what-they-express/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2023 13:21:54 +0000 https://www.healing-power-of-art.org/?p=17978 The Four Elements: Earth, Water, Air and Fire are fundamental building blocks of life that exists in the physical world. These substances that compose the physical universe are visible in the lakes, streams and oceans, mountains, rocks and soil, the wind and atmosphere, the sun and energy. These elements represent the essence of our existence. The elemental framework is a common thread connecting diverse belief systems and the cosmos.

Find Out About Our Exhibition
“The Healing Power of Elements: Earth, Water, Air and Fire” 2023

Artists, consciously or intuitively, may consider choosing a single element or a combination of them when creating their art. Depending on how they incorporate the elements in their works of art the impact can be powerful.

In addition to the physical forms the four elements provide symbolic references to various aspects of life, such as emotions, personality traits, and even spiritual aspects. They have vibrational qualities that are significant in our healing process.

Art that contains a restful lake or stream may connect us to immediate relaxation. A painting that depicts expansive areas of sky may suggest hope and freedom. An abstract painting with shapes and colors that suggest flames could motivate us and ignite feelings of passion, and so on…

The Four Elements Expressed in Art and Symbolic References

The First Artists, oil on canvas, 36 x 36
The First Artists, oil on canvas, 36″ x 36″, by Andre Chatelain, from “The Healing Power of Elements: Earth, Water, Air, Fire” online exhibition.

Earth: Earth is often associated with solidity, stability, and mother earth. Art that illuminates the texture, weight, and color of soil, stone, or wood — either in the abstract form of expression or the realistic style. Also welcome is art that calls our attention to climate change and global warming on earth.

Water: A symbol of purity and fluidity expressed in the abstract or waterscapes and marine life in realism. Art may also call attention to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our water supply and the living creatures therein.

Air: Expressions of movement, art that depicts the sky, evokes the sensation of wind, or displays images of objects such as leaves or feathers transported by the wind.

Fire: A symbol of change and transformation, fire-themed artworks can illustrate the strength and endurance of humans. Art with bright colors and dynamic forms of flames that evoke strong emotions and energy, as well as artworks that explore the light and shadow created by fire.

The Four Elements and Feng Shui

Feng Shui is an ancient art and science that originated more than 3,000 years ago in China. Translated to English, feng means “wind” and shui means “water.” In Chinese culture, wind and water are associated with good health and good Feng Shui is associated with good fortune. Feng Shui is also related closely to the Taoist vision and understanding of nature and the notion that the land is alive and filled with chi (Qi) or energy. Chi is known as “The Dragon’s Cosmic Breath”. That is something to consider when selecting art for your home or office.

He is an extraordinary contemporary artist who creates art with skillful Old Master art techniques using a digital artistic process.

The Forgotten Women of the Nikšić Ruins, digital painting on Hahnemühle German Etching Fine Art Paper, 63″ x 39.4″ by Romeo Varga

Romeo Varga is a European-Australian artist who has created an awe-inspiring series titled “The Mystics of Montenegro”. In this oeuvre of classic feminine beauty, he portrays beguiling muses, angels, and sea goddesses in enchanting mythological vistas. Imbued with the spirit of idealized romanticism his symbolic allegorical paintings recall an innocent, simpler bygone era of human existence which he infuses with his unique contemporary narrative.

Having created art since childhood Romeo’s current choice is digital media which he applies with the same professional precision as traditional mediums used by Old Masters. His skillful compositions are created stroke by stroke, layer upon layer, with modern technology.

Romeo offers his digital paintings as original digital works of art printed on Hahnemühle German Etching Fine Art Paper. In addition to his The Mystics of Montenegro” series he creates extraordinary portrait paintings and more subjects.

Eco-Artist Natalie Oliphant Transforms Recycled Materials Into Life-Affirming Sculptures https://www.healing-power-of-art.org/eco-artist-natalie-oliphant-transforms-recycled-materials-into-life-affirming-sculptures/ https://www.healing-power-of-art.org/eco-artist-natalie-oliphant-transforms-recycled-materials-into-life-affirming-sculptures/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2023 20:55:48 +0000 https://www.healing-power-of-art.org/?p=27802 Natalie Oliphant is an important eco-artist who lives in Canada. She has an extraordinary talent for transforming body forms and mannequins and other discarded items into new life-affirming sculptures. Destined for obscurity in landfills that harm our environment found objects become mixed media works of art that resonate with symbolic and metaphorical references. They will forever serve as seminal contributions to the language of contemporary art made with recycled materials.

Ange ou Demon (Angel or Demon), detail, by Natalie Oliphant
Detail, “Ange ou Demon (Angel or Demon)”, mixed media sculpture, 35″ x 13″ x 9″. Found objects on a recycled body form. Full size view of this sculpture is shown below.

Natalie adorns all sides of her mannequins with tactile surfaces using modelling paste, gesso and found objects. At first glance her exquisite composites made with utilitarian parts — such as coins, chains, fabric, buttons and other humble items — appeal to us for their aesthetic value alone; however, we learn they also ignite powerful emotional reactions.

Natalie unearths a treasure trove of poignant messages with profound impact. Her highly-charged sculptures represent a unique archetype and expand our conscious awareness about the environment, female issues, relationships, diversity, and other complexities about our life choices and experiences.

Fertility, found items, fabric, hardware, gesso, modelling paste on recycled body form, 57"x16"x9" by Natalie Oliphant
“Fertility”, mixed media sculpture, 57″ x 16″ x 9″. Fabric, hardware, gesso, modelling paste on a recycled body form.

Objects such as scissors, buckles, and bolts that she adheres to the sensual torsos arouse associations with abrasion, separation, pain and loss. Items such as zippers and locks may signify feelings about unresolved issues. Thoughts of unfulfilled desires, unspoken words, and unfinished deeds from the past that we may have buried and locked away rise to the surface.

Pieces of leather and lace combined with textures and found objects are adhered to a hanging body form. Shades of denim blue and black with gold accents on this mixed media piece. 30” x 16”. by Natalie Oliphant
“Leather and Lace”, mixed media sculpture, 30” x 16”. Fabric and found objects on a hanging body form.

We identify with Natalie’s forms because she resuscitates discarded objects and memorabilia and converts inanimate objects into timeless, universal stories. Her works of art have pulsating hearts and the power to heal. As we succumb to their messages we confront our human frailties, vulnerabilities, flaws and fears. Her sculptures serve as catalysts to embark upon our quest for personal growth and deepen the process of positive transformation.

Space Garden, oil on canvas, 57″ x 43″

Colours come together to form language and shape from a lucid, kaleidoscopic inner world. I am drawn to relationships between colours and people, nature, and space. My painting process is slow and meditative, mixing oil colours methodically for many hours. Most colours I use are a complex mix of over 20 oils to produce a single unique colour. The works take months and the painting over time becomes a meditation for the soul. karibienert.com

Color is everything to me. In nature the light and shadows are always forming complex shapes, textures, patterns and colors. A particular love is to paint flowers revealing the delicate colors and shapes that make each flower remarkable. I like using many colors in my paintings to create an appreciation for nature and its many colors. tanisbula.com

I love intense colorful impressionism and “Fractal Visions”. Fractals, as the building blocks of all things, often contain vivid colors and sacred geometry. The energy contained within these powerful mathematical expressions can be experienced on a cellular level, creating healing physically, intellectually and spiritually. I imbue my art with many layers of glazing, to exude beautiful translucent colors and a 3-D effect, reflecting an almost surreal, dreamlike quality, allowing the body, mind and spirit to heal as never before. heartscapepaintings.com

Every day, I am tempted by color. Whether it be through observation, letting my imagination soar, mixing on my palette, or drawing vibrant marks, color speaks to me. It houses a language my soul understands and it’s how I like to communicate. Watching it awaken new life as it flows on a canvas demonstrates phenomenal power. Color alone lures me into the studio simply to play, arrange, and compose with its source – a medicine that freely heals. studiokarenjohnston.com

Colour plays a vital part in my paintings. I use analogous and complementary colours placing bright colour with softer tints to express positivity, energy, hope, and joy. Colour has a huge impact on how we feel, and when celebrated in a painting, it can bring a breath of fresh air into a room and uplift and inspire viewers. Colour speaks to my heart and mind and I my aim is to use it to bring happiness to others. andrearobinson.co.nz

I have been involved in a love affair with color all of my life. The exploration of various color combinations motivates me to paint every day. Color has a unique ability to change the way people feel about themselves and the world around them. As I innocently play with colors as an Artist, I am symbolically working out my own inner conflicts, as well as some of the conflicts that exist in the world of which I am a part. steeviejaneparks.com/current-paintings

I create oil paintings that celebrate nature and transport viewers to experience its peacefulness. Colors in nature have always inspired me and affect my emotions positively. I find peace in the greens, blues, and earth tones of forests and streams, and I experience joy in the colors of a sunset. When I need healing, I look out or up and find it in nature. I paint the colors I see to share this peace and joy with others. conniemae-art.com

Sunlight lights up colors, making my heart, literally, feel like it’s flying, taking my body and soul with it, healing everything in that moment. I feel this in nature, watching water reflections or the ever-changing show of colors and patterns forming behind my closed eyes in the sun. It’s an experience we all have available to us. Though ephemeral, I try to capture that experience and encourage everyone to pay attention to this joyful experience of color. nancynatowcassidy.com

I am bathed in color during my waking hours. Bright sun and bold colors energize me, while muted shades or pastels make me reflective and calm. I sense the temperature of light that surrounds me, and the warmth or coolness of it invokes energy or calmness in my search for photographic subjects. Decisions about contrast and saturation of color and the clarity of subject matter allow me to achieve my desired photographic effects. Spirits are lifted or calmed by color. sbvaz.com

Joyful Heart, mixed media on canvas, 28” x 34”

My life as an artist is about sparking joy with color. I paint abstracted flowers because nature provides a horticultural ice cream parlor of saturated colors. I use layers of luminous color, with bold and delicate lines and shapes to portray the essence of flowers. I use acrylics, often adding oil sticks and inks. Big and small brushes, and even twigs from my garden are used to express exuberance and positivity in the delicate dance of colors on canvas. lyndagoldmanfineart.com

She is highly proficient in applying the dynamics of color theory and integrates a range of hues with organic and curvilinear elements. Her art combines her many artistic skills with intuition and engages viewers visually and viscerally.

The artist’s background in Clinical Psychology contributes to her profound insight into the science of color and the healing potential it has on our minds and emotions.

Gratitude, oil on gallery wrapped canvas, 36” x 36”. This painting was selected for “The Healing Power of Color” 2023 juried exhibition.

Steevie deftly composes varying shapes and forms that evoke spontaneity and sensations of continuity, harmony, and infinite possibilities. She arouses feelings of interconnectedness through rhythmic undulations and circular motifs. Her use of overlapping spatial planes envelop both the microcosm and macrocosm. Tactile brushwork further increases depth and dimension.

The titles of Steevie’s paintings are in perfect alignment with her images and their life-affirming messages. Two examples are “Gratitude” and “Healing”. The soft palette, luminosity and meditative qualities calm the mind and lull us into states of peaceful contemplation.

Creativity by Steevie Jane Parks
Creativity, acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas, 36″ x 36″

Steevie’s vibrant painting “Creativity” awakens our inner spirit. Symbolic forms and contrasting colors emphasize dynamism and intensity. The mesmerizing glowing forms conjure visions of stained glass and kaleidoscopes.

Biomorphic elements also enliven many of Steevie’s paintings. However, they transcend their physical details in favor of illuminating their intrinsic essence. Her animated references to patterns from the natural world are often inspired by painting en plein air. Her  use of contoured human forms reflect her innovative interpretation of a developed knowledge of anatomy.
